Family Planning in Coorparoo

Confidential, non-judgemental support for pregnancy planning, contraception choices, and unexpected pregnancy.

Family Planning in Coorparoo

Making decisions about your family — whether that means planning a pregnancy, choosing a contraceptive method, or navigating an unexpected pregnancy — deserves careful, confidential support. At Coorparoo Clinic, our GPs provide non-judgemental family planning advice in a private setting.

Whatever your situation, we are here to give you accurate information, listen to your preferences, and help you make decisions that are right for you.

Contraception

There are many contraceptive options available, and the right choice depends on your health, your lifestyle, and your personal preferences. Your GP can discuss the full range with you — including:

  • Oral contraceptive pills (combined and progestogen-only)
  • Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), including the Mirena IUD and contraceptive implant
  • Barrier methods
  • Emergency contraception
  • Permanent contraception options (via referral)

Mirena insertions and removals — the Mirena hormonal intrauterine system can be inserted and removed at the clinic by GPs trained in this procedure. It is one of the most effective long-acting reversible contraceptive options available and can also be used to manage heavy periods. Your GP will assess whether it may be suitable for your individual circumstances.

Pre-pregnancy planning

If you are thinking about becoming pregnant, a pre-conception consultation with your GP can help you prepare. This may include:

  • Reviewing your current medications and health status
  • Discussing folic acid and iodine supplementation
  • Checking immunisation status (including rubella and varicella)
  • Blood tests to identify anything that may benefit from attention before conception
  • Advice on lifestyle factors that can support a healthy pregnancy

Pregnancy support

Once you are pregnant, your GP can confirm the pregnancy, arrange initial blood tests and an early ultrasound, and discuss your antenatal care options with you.

Coorparoo Clinic participates in Mater Mothers Hospital’s Shared Antenatal Care programme, which means you can have many of your pregnancy check-ups at the clinic with your regular GP, with hospital appointments at Mater Mothers at key points in your pregnancy. This may suit you if you value continuity of care with a GP you know and trust. Your GP can advise whether Shared Antenatal Care may be an appropriate option for your pregnancy.

Unexpected pregnancy

If you have an unexpected pregnancy and are uncertain about your options, your GP can provide information about all available pathways — continuing the pregnancy, adoption, and termination — in a confidential, non-judgemental setting. You will not be pressured toward any particular outcome. Your GP can provide referrals to appropriate services based on your decision.
